And we’re going up! Blocks started getting set today. The crawl space will be much higher on one side of the house than the other. We didn’t realize it would be this high. It turned out this way because of the slope of the land and so that the garage to house entry will only have a step or two. The extra height on the crawl space will allow for an almost full size crawl space door and storage under the front porch. It also will give us a nice view over the western hills and sunsets of Maury County.
Where the block is tall like in the front we will need to core fill the blocks. During core filling rebar is placed into the cavities of the blocks then concrete is poured into the holes. The core filling ties the entire block wall together into almost a solid piece of concrete.
The nice thing about a front porch like we will have is there will be plenty of storage area. We’ve even considered putting together a storm shelter room or using the space as a root cellar space. A concrete floor tied together with rebar will cover the porch area crawl space making it a very solid structure. More on that later!
There’s lots of block to go!
